About 1Password

At 1Password, we’re building the foundation for a safe, productive digital future. Our mission is to unleash employee productivity without compromising security by ensuring every identity is authentic, every application sign-in is secure, and every device is trusted. We innovated the market-leading enterprise password manager and pioneered Extended Access Management, a new cybersecurity category built for the way people and AI agents work today. As one of the most loved brands in cybersecurity, we take a human-centric approach in everything from product strategy to user experience. Over 175,000 businesses and millions of people trust us to provide seamless, secure access to their most critical information.

If you're excited about the opportunity to contribute to the digital safety of millions, to work alongside a team of curious, driven individuals, and to solve hard problems in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, then we want to hear from you. Come join us and help shape a safer, simpler digital future.

As a Senior Staff Product Designer – AI, you will be a cross-organizational design leader driving the vision, strategy, and design excellence behind how 1Password harnesses artificial intelligence responsibly and securely. You’ll operate at the intersection of product, platform, and organizational design — defining cohesive AI experience strategies that span multiple product areas and influence the company’s approach to trustworthy, privacy-aware AI.

You’ll partner closely with senior product, research, data, and engineering leadership to shape how AI is integrated across 1Password’s ecosystem. Your work will inform not only how our customers interact with intelligent systems, but also how we design for emerging forms of identity, trust, and automation.

This role blends visionary systems thinking with a hands-on design practice—inspiring, guiding, and empowering teams to deliver cohesive, humane, and secure AI experiences at scale.

This is a remote opportunity within Canada and the US.

What we're looking for:

  • 10 + years of product design experience, with deep expertise in end-to-end product strategy, systems thinking, and leading multi-track design initiatives.

  • Proven success designing and shipping AI-powered experiences (e.g., generative AI, predictive UX, LLM-powered assistants, ML-driven automation, etc.).

  • Strong understanding of intelligent system behavior — ability to design for non-deterministic outcomes, explainability, and human-AI collaboration.

  • Demonstrated ability to operate at both strategic and tactical levels, translating company vision into actionable design roadmaps.

  • Deep commitment to ethical and inclusive AI, ensuring privacy, transparency, and accessibility in every aspect of the user experience.

  • Exceptional storytelling and facilitation skills; ability to drive alignment across senior stakeholders through clarity and empathy.

  • A strong portfolio showcasing high-impact design work, demonstrating thought leadership, conceptual rigor, and system-level influence.

  • Proven experience mentoring Staff and Senior Designers, nurturing design maturity and strategic impact across teams.

  • Comfortable influencing executives and cross-org partners through a mix of design evidence, research insights, and customer empathy.

  • A growth mindset and desire to pioneer responsible AI design practices in a fast-moving domain.

Nice to have Skills:

  • Experience shaping company-wide design systems or AI interaction patterns across multiple products.

  • Familiarity with AI model lifecycle design — from data curation to user feedback loops and explainability.

  • Prior experience in security, developer tools, or enterprise SaaS environments.

  • Published thought leadership on AI UX, ethics, or product design strategy (talks, writing, or open-source work).

What you can expect:

  • Define and lead the multi-product UX vision for AI, aligning teams around cohesive principles that guide how we design intelligent, human-centered, and privacy-conscious experiences.

  • Shape design strategy for both “AI for Security” and “Security for AI” — ensuring our products use AI responsibly while keeping customers in control of their data and decisions.

  • Influence company-wide AI strategy, partnering with executive and technical leaders to define frameworks that balance innovation, risk, and user trust.

  • Connect and scale design work across multiple product areas, ensuring consistency and coherence in how AI features express our brand and values.

  • Mentor and guide Staff and Senior Designers, strengthening systems-level thinking, advanced prototyping, and ethical AI design practices across the EDR organization.

  • Champion evidence-based design, fostering close partnerships with Research and Data Science to derive actionable insights and shape our AI design language.

  • Evolve AI design principles and toolkits for 1Password’s design system, enabling teams to responsibly integrate AI-driven interactions with clarity and confidence.

  • Represent the design org externally and internally, sharing thought leadership through presentations, writing, or public speaking on topics of AI, privacy, and human-centered security.

  • Drive culture change, helping the EDR team adopt new AI-enhanced design workflows and encouraging experimentation while upholding design integrity.

Month 1

  • Deeply understand 1Password’s AI vision, technical foundations, and design culture.

  • Meet key partners in Product, Engineering, Data Science, and Research to map how AI initiatives connect across the company.

  • Identify current and future opportunities for design influence within the AI workstream.

  • Begin assessing the maturity of existing AI UX patterns and principles across products.

Month 3

  • Lead early design explorations that test and refine the AI experience strategy across product surfaces.

  • Establish and communicate AI design principles — balancing security, trust, and usability.

  • Begin mentoring other designers involved in AI-related workstreams, facilitating critiques and strategy sessions.

  • Partner with product and research to validate assumptions through discovery and user testing.

Month 6 +

  • Operate as the central design voice for AI strategy, influencing multiple roadmaps and shaping the long-term product direction.

  • Drive cross-organizational alignment around AI design standards, patterns, and ethical guidelines.

  • Regularly represent 1Password’s AI UX vision in company-wide forums and external thought-leadership opportunities.
Mentor and guide designers and teams, helping them navigate complexity while maintaining craft quality and purpose.

  • Continue evolving 1Password’s AI UX vision, ensuring it reflects our mission: to make every interaction secure, human, and empowering.
