Staff Engineer
Take Command Health
About Take Command
Take Command is a start-up on a mission to improve the healthcare system, starting with health insurance. Pragmatically speaking, we help employers reimburse employees for individual insurance instead of offering a traditional one-size-fits-all group plan. We believe this model can empower employees (when they have the right support) to be savvy healthcare consumers and have a transformative impact on the entire healthcare system.
Let’s be honest—health insurance is usually a confusing, frustrating, and even emotional experience for people. We want to fix that with a new model, great technology, and a superior user experience. We have made a great start, but we need your help to fully realize our long-term vision.
As a part of the dev team, you'll build the framework for both our clients and our team to succeed. You will be a pillar in our company as we grow and make our product the best product on the market.
In this role, you will:
-
Take ownership of delivering a major initiative, ensuring its quality and cohesion across multiple features and contributors.
-
Lead and coach a team of engineers in designing and writing maintainable, scalable and performant code for web applications built on Java, Hibernate ORM, Postgres (AWS Aurora), and AWS services (Lambda, SQS, SNS, API Gateway, Cognito, etc.).
-
Actively identify and drive implementation of code and process improvements to make the product easier to use, manage, and maintain.
-
Facilitate effective sprint planning, grooming, stand-ups, and retrospectives. Guide the team in applying the right SDLC methodology for the initiative.
-
Coach engineers on estimating work, planning sprints, and integrating their features into the broader initiative.
-
Keep a pulse on the team’s morale and performance. Motivate and mentor engineers to grow professionally and deliver high-quality software.
-
Communicate the “why” behind initiatives to ensure the team is aligned with the product vision and empowered to make sound technical decisions.
-
Build strong relationships across product, design, sales, client success, marketing, and business development to help meet organizational goals.
-
Articulate software delivery and solution concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences to facilitate timely decision-making.
-
Exercise sound judgment in choosing processes and approaches to deliver solutions. Present multiple paths with pros, cons, and recommendations while considering people, processes, and scope.
You may be a great fit for this role if you have:
-
At least 8 years of professional experience in software development, with 2+ years in a leadership or management role.
-
Experience leading teams in Agile, Scrum, or Lean environments.
-
Strong technical background in Python, Django, Typescript with React, SQL, Java, Hibernate ORM, SQL, and a cloud platform like Heroku or AWS.
-
Proven ability to coach engineers, manage delivery of complex initiatives, and foster a collaborative team culture.
-
Excellent communication skills and the ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders.
Location: DFW (Richardson, TX) or Austin, TX
